Prepare Your Home for the Fall Season

Fall is right around the corner, which means it is the perfect time to prepare your house to make it more warm and cozy. The fall season is a favorite time for many, especially due to the chilly weather and warm colors of fall leaves. While there is no scientific evidence to back this up, psychologists often associate feelings of warmth, joy, optimism, and excitement with fall tones.

However, if you truly want to enjoy these feelings, your living space should welcome this wonderful season with open arms. Preparing your home for the fall season does not have to be stressful, so we have created a list of practical and useful tips to help you get started. These tips will help you to transition from summer to fall smoothly.

Eight Tips on Preparing Your Home for Fall

1. Clean or Replace the Gutters-

It is also essential to ensure that your gutters are clean before it gets too cold to clean them. Moreover, you must also check if they need replacement since clogged gutters may damage your exteriors and flood the interior space. Thus, this task must be at the top of your priority list.

2. Check for Drafts -

Before the chilly winter winds hit, you want to ensure that there are no drafts in your windows and doors. If you find a draft in your door, you can easily replace the weather stripping. However, windows require more attention as you may have to replace the entire unit to keep your home well-insulated. According to research, heat loss due to window openings leads to a 25 to 30% increase in heat energy usage. So, if you want your home to be energy-efficient, warm, and cozy in the fall, you must not skip this step.

3. Clean the Fireplace-

Homeowners often neglect the fireplace during the summer months, which is why this is the perfect time to remove all the accumulated dust and ashes. You can use a shovel or broom for this purpose. Lastly, wiping off the soot from the bricks using a wire brush is essential. You can make a DIY cleaning solution by mixing baking soda with warm water. All you need to do is dip the cleaning sponge in the solution to clean the remaining dust and soot from the fireplace.

4. Stock up on Firewood- .

Once the fireplace is clean, it is important to stock up on firewood that will last you the entire season. You can also use it while hosting campfires with your friends and family.

5. Spread Fertilizer on Your Lawn-

You won’t be required to maintain your garden in the winter months as often as in summer and spring. Thus, it is recommended to mulch or fertilize your lawn before fall starts to ensure that your soil and lawn are in good condition.

6. Ensure the Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Detectors Are Working Fine-

Before fall starts, getting your living space better equipped to keep you and your loved ones safe is essential. Check all the weather equipment and make necessary repairs or replacements. It is also important to check the batteries of your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors before using firewood or heaters around the house.

7. Secure Your Outdoor Furniture-

It is not recommended to leave your summer outdoor furniture out during the fall as they are usually not weather and snow-storm resistant.  So, you can organize your garage and make space for outdoor furniture. However, you can cover the furniture with a waterproof protector if you lack storage space.

8. Invest in an Air Purifier-

During colder months, it is not possible to ventilate your living space by opening the windows. So, why not invest in an air purifier to improve the air quality for you and your loved ones?

Final Word

Taking care of these simple things before fall to prepare your home will prevent hassle, stress, and costly repairs in the winter months. Moreover, you’ll also be able to enjoy your space a lot more.
